Hypnotherapy is a brief strategic therapy - one that is aimed specifically at finding a resolution to your problem as quickly, safely and efficiently as possible. It is not a long drawn out method of solving a problem. A skilled SFBT hypnotherapist will have the ability to use techniques to achieve the changes you desire in a positive and upbeat way.
Can the therapist make me do things I don’t want to do?
No – At all times you remain in control. For Hypnotherapy to be successful you need to be comfortable with what is going on in the session. If a suggestion is made that you don’t agree with, you will reject it.
If you remain in control, what about stage shows where people do silly things that make them look foolish?
Successful stage hypnosis requires willing volunteers. These people have a desire to join in the show and perform, or they wouldn’t volunteer to go on stage in the first place.
Can anyone be hypnotized?
The majority of people can be successfully hypnotized with some people having the ability to achieve deeper levels of trance than others. It should be noted that the depth of trance is not an indicator of successful treatment. People with dementia or an extremely low IQ are more difficult to hypnotize. People who are in an active state of psychosis or under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not suitable for hypnosis.
Are there any dangers associated with hypnosis or self-hypnosis?
No - it is impossible to "get stuck" in hypnosis or made to do anything against your will.
Will I be unconscious or asleep during hypnosis?
Nothing could be further from the truth. Hypnosis is a state of keen awareness whilst being deeply relaxed. You will be awake and aware of everything going on around you.
Will the therapist want me to divulge secrets?
No – the methods we use at advance practice are forward looking and it’s therefore not important to uncover or discuss events from your past unless you wish to do so.
